Our favorite varieties: Julius, Double Shot, Green.
In this ranking, we have discussed cloudy IPAs extensively, either directly or indirectly. We have discussed their origins, highlighting The Alchemist and Maine Beer Co. We have included breweries known for their exceptional cloudy varieties, such as Trillium and Great Notion. But after almost nine years, we’re not sure anyone does them better than Tree House, one of the first breweries to become famous for cloudy IPAs. Since 2011, their signature style has managed to blend stunning hoppiness with a certain ephemeral je ne sais quoi that sets them apart from other breweries. They manage to produce beer that is both decadent and easy to drink.
If you’ve tried a lot of bad hazy IPAs over the past five years (God knows we have), then you know exactly what we mean. Hell, Tree House beer is as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside. Take, for example, their legendary Julius IPA, which any connoisseur of this style would easily call a masterpiece. It embodies everything that Tree House does well with hops — a soft mouthfeel and an ephemeral lightness.
Explosive notes of mango, passion fruit, and citrus juice, but at the same time a dry finish and just enough residual sweetness to make the fruit seem real. Just a hint of bitterness to balance the sweetness. Unlike many other beers inspired by Julius, this one is incredibly easy to drink — and incredibly enjoyable. That’s what makes it stand out. And, of course, Tree House isn’t just about hops. Their stouts are just as good as their IPAs — whether it’s the frequently released That’s What She Said or the wonderfully balanced coffee stout Double Shot. Together, they’re a “one-two punch” that is unmatched in terms of pure hedonistic pleasure.
